The skills required

The job of technical project manager requires both technical and managerial skills. They need to understand the technological aspects of the project, while knowing how to manage multi-disciplinary teams and communicate effectively with the various parties involved.

 

  • Excellent technical skills: knowledge of the technologies used (development, databases, network infrastructures) to fully understand the challenges facing the teams and anticipate problems.
  • Project management: proficiency in project management methods (particularly agile project management), ability to plan tasks and manage resources to meet deadlines.
  • Leadership and communication: the ability to motivate teams, manage conflicts and communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills: the ability to make quick decisions to overcome obstacles and propose appropriate solutions.

 

The working environment in technical projects

Technical project managers work in a variety of environments, often juggling several teams and projects:

 

  • Large companies: they often manage large-scale projects with large, multidisciplinary technical teams.
  • Digital services companies (ESN): they manage projects on behalf of customers, ensuring on-time delivery while respecting the constraints of each assignment.
  • Start-ups: They may have a versatile, more operational role, while supervising all technical processes.

Career development

Technical project managers can progress to positions with greater management or technical responsibility. They may become project directors, supervising several projects or defining the company’s technological strategy. Some specialise in programme management or technical architecture, where they take charge of large-scale, long-term projects.

Average salary for technical project managers

The salary of a technical project manager varies according to experience, the size of the company and the complexity of the projects:

 

  • Junior: an entry-level technical project manager can expect to earn between €40,000 and €50,000 gross per year.
  • Confirmed: with several years’ experience, the average salary is between €50,000 and €60,000 gross per year.
  • Senior: experienced technical project managers can earn between €60,000 and €80,000 gross per year.
